I have been restoring cars since I turned 40- My wife says its a midlife crisis thing. So far I have built and sold the following: 69 Chevelle SS396, 73 MGB, 69 Chevelle Malibu, and now I'm working on a 72 MGB (spot a trend?) I am a mechanical engineer, so I can't leave anything stock- I prefer to alter and adapt and upgrade.

Steering Column Installation

Posted on: Friday May 11, 2012

86 Maxima column

The steering column I'm installing is from an 86 Nissan Maxima. It has all the controls in the column (lights, wipers, hazard, ignition, cruise control) and no air bag, so I can replace the existing steering wheel with something more comfortable. The plastic fairing around the column also fits into the notch in the MG dash, so that is a plus. The first problem (of many I assume) is the mounting points don't match the MG, so i am modifying the MG bracket to hold the column in the correct location...

front view

The moment of truth- I installed the front end under the car, and it looks like everything fits like it was meant to. Woo hoo! The oil pan has about 1/2" of clearance between the bottom and the cross member. The pulleys on the front clear the steering rack nicely. The power steering connection fits between the oil pan and frame, and there is a gap between engine and frame to run the steering linkage (under the turbo, then up to the firewall). It's like I planned it, but it's always nice when th...

Front Suspension Assembly

completed assembly rear view

I completed the front suspension assembly and installed it under the car this weekend. I had a completed assembly that I just moved all the parts from the old cross member to the new one. The only wrinkle is the bolts that hold the member to the frame have to be installed prior to installing the suspension- or the hole the bold installs through is covered up. The power steering hose connections are easily accessable, and nothing seems to be binding, so this should be good to go!

Modifying The Cross Member, Part 3

completed cross member

I finally finished the cross member: - welded on the steering rack mounts - trimmed off the excess material - trimmed the ends to install the coil over suspension - painted the finished product
