So i finally got around to puting the new timing belt on. Some one put one on a few years ago and the cam was off by a tooth. I get it all apart and find the distributer gear was also off by 2 or more teeth as well. To make up for it they retarded the distributer. I dont know how it ran. I put back into time and installed some new spark plugs. The car runs alot better and smoother untill i blew the vacume line off of the intake which made stoping fun by the way. Got that reinstalled and clamped down. Now i need to get the turn signals working and the wipers as well then i think it can be driven on the street with no problems. Its a slow project but its comeing along.

Just started on project cone killer. Cone killer is a 1990 VW Corrado with a G60 5 speed manual. When i got it, it did not start. Found it to be out of time and the fuel was varnashed. Droped and cleaned the tank. It was a real mess. Reinstalled with a new fuel pump and sending unit. Installed a used but still good battery. Took some cranks but it started. Buying the timing belt kit tuesday and will install when i have time. Still other issues to solve but geting running right is the maine thing now. Will be updateing as i restomod the car.

After what feels like forever, I finally made it out to the garage and managed to stay there more than 5 minutes without freezing my tail off.

Note to self, pick up a radiative heater.

I pulled the supercharger out onto a bench and after some examination of the vintage corrosion in place, I began to remove bolts. I started with the silencer box, finding that the plastic around the captive nuts was on strike and they just spun around in place. I took a screwdriver and managed to chip away enough to allow enough purchase area for the vice-grips.

I took the simple route, and began to remove any bolt or clip I could see. Yes sir, when it comes to simple, I'm a natural. Things slowly progressed and after putting off the mystery for so many months, the interior of the supercharger revealed itself. On initial inspection the supercharger seemed in good nic. I began to examine it closer and found that the apex strips were so badly worn, they were very close to flush in their slots. So bad in fact, that I almost didn't see that there were slots in both the main housing halves and the internal scrolls. I carefully found a high point and slowly pried out the strips from their long held, 23 year, resting spot. They were a bit brittle, to be expected, I suppose considering their age and the number of heat cycles they had endured.

This weekend I hope to clean up the housing, put on my reading glasses and with a large magnifying glass, examine every minute bit of it. Then out comes the industrial hair dryer, to apply heat to the housing and remove the bearings and seals. Then after studying every rebuild guide, technical brief and even a farmer's almanac if will help, I will begin to put it all back together. One of the hardest steps I anticipate is finding the right finish for the magnesium alloy housing. Something that will stand up to the heat and grime, yet stick to the alloy surface. And what color....being colorblind I'm partial to simple black or chrome with red accents to match the car. We'll have to wait and see.

Pic's to follow.

Eugene S's Journal --

Well I have been busy. Sadly not in the garage, where I should be, performing wrench therapy, but that four letter word WORK. Although I know that the first thing I should be working on is the supercharger, verifying the vanes are intact, no unusual wear marks, cracks or chunks. However I've found myself wandering the information highway trying to learn all I can about the car and decide what direction I may someday take it in.

I'm used to working on older motorcycles from the late '70s and '80s. Often with them, designs changing yearly, there are parts from other models that people have discovered can be bolted on as an upgrade. Similar to the Corrado with the Mk2 performance items and the many upgrades...yadda yadda, I digress and you all know this. Even on my Datsun 260Z I had a pair of Toyota truck calipers with a later model oversized rotor. I love the look of a hyper little rally car and the Corrado certainly leans itself as a great platform for this. I've committed to building the car back up in stock form, then each winter furthering the development towards the my own version of what I want.

Trying to stick to such a plan is proving to be challenging. I keep finding myself eyeing up rims on small cars. It is the one thing that I'm positive of what I want. I want to go up a size in rims, and at some impressionable young age I fell in love with the rims I saw on a porsche 911. Black rims with a chrome beauty ring around the outside. I considered taking the rims I had (seen in earlier posts), to get media blasted and then powder coat the inside "star" pattern only (like the pic I found below), but after a quick calculation, the cost would be such that I may as well just get what I wanted. Also the stockers are 15" and it couldn't hurt to go a bit larger in diameter, plus they just look...well....heavy! 17", or larger, was eventually ruled out as I still intend to keep the car as a weekend driver in nice weather in summer only. Going too large on the rims meant that the rubber would be so thin it would detract from the ride quality. So I settled on 16" rims.

Budgetary concerns being what they are (I've got two kids in college afterall), I needed to find a used set that would be affordable. I found the set pictured below and the price..."if you come pick them up tonight you can have them for $150". Truly a offer I couldn't refuse. They were previously on a civic and have an offset of 40et which is a bit too much but I'll try them and, if need be, create a spacer for them. I'm not sure they are really two piece as they first appear, however I like the look, and, if I have to use them as red wheels for now, I can live with it. Also, if I dress up the rotors and calipers, I feel the new 16" wheels would expose the bling better.

Now... supercharger...focus damn it!

Stopped at the local Mall-wart who, by the way, seem to have really reduced the selection of batteries available. When you look up a Volkswagen Corrado, there is no listing against that make and model. Luckily I had the dimensions from the stock battery and was able to get a tape measure from the staff...erh "associate" (Its a proven fact that if you give your staff a title you don't need to pay as much). In any case the woman was quite helpful and I managed to find a battery EverReady 48, that seemed within an eighth of an inch in each dimension.

Brought it home, slipped it into the car and connected up the posts. A slight whirring noice emminated from the inside of the car. Hmmm.... can't wait now, could be seconds from hearing the engine roll over, not run mind you, just roll over..... oh yeah the bar is low.

Do you remember Christmas morning, getting that new gismo only to realize the batteries you were given aren't the right type? Then you get the correct batteries and all the wait seems worth it, because now you are on the verge of gratification. Ever then discover the gismo is defective. Life's that way sometimes, a roller coaster of emotions. I climbed into the Corrado and turned the key, headlights on, dash lights up, but.... no tell tale noise of an engine rolling over. BUT WAIT! push in the clutch and the brake in hopes there is a safety switch blocking my joy. I pushed both pedals down, totally fogetting there is no brake pads in the front calipers DRAT! and turned the key..... nothing. Lunch bag let down. This only lasted for a few seconds, this is a project afterall.

Likely one of two things, the car has a viper alarm system, could be interfering with the ignition. Probably why the previous owner had pulled the control unit for the alarm and left it in the glovebox. On the other hand, Corrado's are infamous for battery cables being woefully under designed. I've read a couple of posts warning of such a weakness. I looked at the cables, tracing them down to the starter. The connection is really corroded. I'm going to have to pull the starter and see if will respond to 12V directly from the battery. The starter, and much of the engine really, have a layer of corrosion that is a good indicator of the length of time the car stayed in storage was not the driest of places.

Ah well, signed up for a project, didn't I?

I decided to call it a night, but before I headed in, I thought I would crawl underneath and check the floors. From what I can see, she's a beaut. Very solid. Crawled around under the dash looking for the OBD connector... didn't find one, but it must be there somewhere. Overall, I think I'm beginning to suffer a bout of reality, but still not regretting the project. I just have to focus on one thing at a time and get it registered, running and then safetied. All other issues after that are just improvements on my project.

Feels good.

Eugene S's Journal --

Well first things first. Had to spend most of the weekend cleaning out the garage to make room for the Uber Hatch. Finally late today everything was sorted and placed off to one side of the man-cave and I rolled her inside. A real inspection could now begin. No battery means Its hard to verify even if a light bulb works, so that will be the first order of business.

Right on its heals will be the pursuit of the question, why did the previous owner remove the altenator? Was it just to be out of the way of the supercharger? I'll have to pack it up and take it to an automotive place for a look see. Preferrably, I'll try to find a local shop that can test it for me.

Another glaring issue... the supercharger. It was supposedly "blowing oil", so I think I'll check it out. At the very least I could open it and record the seal and bearing numbers to be sourced for a rebuild. Also a local shop may be able to source the apex stips??...well I'll see at least.

Lastly, I think I will have to pull off the wheels and check all the brakes. Currently it has the pads removed as an effort to help rolling it around. I'll have to check the calipers and see if they are seized. Either way the disc look pretty rusty from setting and as soon as funds allow, I may want to look at getting a set of nice rotors and calipers.

Well. Looks like my initial shopping list is beginning to take form. I suppose before any of this takes place, its off to register it in my name... after all, no sense in working on something only to find out you don't own it.

Title is cheesy, I know, but my daughter suggested it on the way out to pick up the car.

First, it took a bit of calling around for a car dolly I could borrow, and then a quick trip to the bank for the outstanding balance and the car is home.

On the subject of car dolly's, there is nothing to test the patience like trying to back up a bloody short trailer. Ever try it? Mostly backing up a trailer is easy. I use the old guide that if you simply move the bottom of the steering wheel in the direction that you want the back of the trailer to move in, you can do almost anything. Problem is that my natural instincts don't seem to line up well, coupled with my lack of experience. I managed to back down the short country lane and only had to pull forward to straighten it out a couple of times.

Finally at a point, I realized I was backing up a slight slope...and since the car doesn't run, ...that small downhill would make loading easier. So, off to push the car about 40ft and onto the trailer it went.

After an uneventful drive home (Thank Gawd for that) I think I almost had a stroke pushing it up the sloped driveway...but it is home and it is mine.... well after I register it, pay taxes, yadda yadda.

Today, September 8th, marks the start of my new project. I just put a deposit on a 1990 Corrado with less that 60K showing on the odometer. Smallest amount of rust at the back, just above the bumper, and on the drivers door. The supercharger?... its in the trunk with the altenator. Previous owner stated that the seals needed replacing. The passengers floor is damp (torrential rain yesterday), but that's not a problem, it will soon have a nice dry place to stay.
Paul, tired of me blowing his doors off on the way to work every day, with me in my 1985 "Rootbeer Float" colored Cabriolet which I've tweeked n tweeked, and him in his 1990 Red Corrado G60, stalled just before we got there...he said "that's it, I'm done with it you can have it for $800" so I said "um Ok". Well later that day my oldest son and I went to get her. He said what the hell is that a Mercedies? At thst point no grill no badges and never having seen a G60 I could see his mistake.

Now I work on the Engine bay. Complete wiring of new. Now the engine is black. Alternator, intake manifold and valve cover are polished. Fully recyclable alternator, new bearings and brushes. I think I will finish with the engine bay after one month.

My first fix on the car was the roof. The old one was verry dirty and I make the ceiling of leather. At the rear of the cabin I fit lighting. Now look very good. Then I bought a new steering. But now I want to sell it and install the original. I buy new audio. Alpine iDa-X 301. The sound is pretty nice. I put new speakers in a backside. The music is enough for the moment. I change the grid. The new one is without emblem.

I dreamed many times about Corrado. When I went in to UK to work I was sure in that I will buy Corrado. And One day I bought in Acktion VR6 2.9 liters. But after one week I gave up buying. The reason was in Bulgarian legislation. If you buy car more than 120 kW you must pay a lot of excise. For 2.9 140 kW, the excise was ~ 3200.00$. After one month I found 2.0i, 16 valve in Brighton, UK. The car was pretty original. With not so good shape. The car never had a garage. In a right backside have a rust, there is a rust in a place of the battery. The catalyst had come loose and was hanging. The car was pretty noise. I fix it on the next day. After two weeks
I left for Bulgaria, and the car was like a bird. The engine was in verry good condition. In Romania had a problem. The clutch is broke. I drove ~ 450 km without clutch very slowly. When I arrive in Bulgaria it was the first thing which I fix. After six mounts i go back to the UK. Now I am in Bulgaria and work on the car, but not so fast. I don't have so much time.

Kent Waddington's Journal --

I was driving to Toronto in mid-October (2011) and for some reason, as if it were a sign from God, my head was filled with the memory of seeing a sweet little quasi-cranberry-coloured Corrado in a restaurant parking lot in Ottawa three or four years ago. Being a car freak/geek, this was not unusual. I think of cars OFTEN. The memory was short-lived and life carried on.

Days later, on October 13, I receive a text message from an unknown phone number asking simply "Hi there is this kent?"

"Who wants to know?" was my reply.

"Haha, I don't know if you would remember but you left a card on my Corrado a few years back saying if I ever plan on selling the car to let you know :), well that time has come."

So, was this a sign from God? Was he testing me? Teasing me? Or just jerking my chain?

The owner, Clint, and I exchanged a few texts and I went to Ottawa to look at the car and take it for a test drive.

Yes, you guessed it. I bought the car. Who could resist the purrrrrr of that supercharger at 140 kms...

My first VW. And probably the best looking one they ever built. I would later learn it was in fact 'burgundy pearl' and not 'quasi cranberry' but I can live with that colour. Love it! It was the colour that attracted me to the car in the first place at the Montana's restaurant in the IDEA plaza in Ottawa. I remember the food not being all that good ... but now having the car has more than made up for it.

I sold my G60 Corrado back in April of 2008. It still lives on in Oshkosh, Wisconsin with its new owner. I don't believe he is a part of Corrado World. At any rate, I finally reached my limit with the car when the new timing belt I had installed broke for the final time. I grew tired of wrenching on it when I'd have rather been driving it.

Nice to see the picture of it on the website header...thanks for that Skye.

My replacement ride is a 2001 Audi TT Quattro Roadster. Tastefully modded and quick as hell. Reliable too! I added a headliner for the convertible top, a center armrest, and a factory luggage rack I found on EBAY. I also tracked down the original Pzwo P1 wheels that were on the car when it was bought new by Hillside Imports here in Portland.

I had a 1990 Nugget Yellow G60, but sold her in 1995 due to starting a family. I always hoped to have another, but thought it unlikely due to the limited number available. Unexpectedly, I came across one just like the one I had owned on Craigslist. Within a week, she was mine! I am loving every minute!

I've had my corrado for about 7 years. Lately there has been a problem with it. I replaced the broken supercharger, and the new one broke within a matter of days. I don't know what happened, can someone help me?

Darran Eggleton's Journal --

It was 1996 and I was walking through the college car park when I saw a Red Corrado and instantly fell in love with the beautiful shape and look of the VW Coupe. Only when I finally got round to buying a Corrado in September 2008 did I realise the coincidence of my 'love at first sight'-ing as I found that my newly purchased Corrado was registered in the same year I first saw one.

I know I probably paid a bit over the odds for my Corrado, but it was mint and it was exactly what I wanted, so who's to tell me how much to pay for something I'd wanted for 12 years. It has black leather interior with heated seats, sunroof, electic windows etc and compaired to the Peugeot 306 Diesel I had at the time, it didn't have an accelerator - it had a hyper space pedal.

The bloke I bought it from is a VW Mechanic who had been head hunted and was moving to Germany. It has loads of paperwork and all the vital work had been done. When I handed over the deposit, the owners Dad opened a bottle of champayne and gave me and my girlfriend a glass. Nice.

Since then the car has a few bits that I've added to my 'to-do' list to get her back up to the scratch.

The reason for me starting this Journal is because my girlfirend and I are taking the Corrado on a European Tour down to Northern Italy for a friends wedding, then back through Switzerland and poss Germany and Luxembourg. The highlights (apart from the wedding obviously) are going to be the Monaco F1 GP track in Monte Carlo (can't wait to turn the corner and boot it through the tunnel) and the Stelvio Pass on the way back. So I intend to take many pictures of the Corrado throughout the trip for you all to see.

well i finally become a member of the corrado family, yesterday i purchased my first corrado, i owned a 01 jetta before but thats about it, i always liked the shape of the corrados and now im loving the driving part. it's new territory for me and on top o that, all the badges on the car are gone, came with no manuals, no door jam stickers, no nothing.
Aside from the blown g charger obvious by the huge missing chunk from the top of it, missing stereo, speakers, messed up shocks, wire showing on tires, rusted through the hatch door, i see true potential.
This is gonna be a long hard adventure but i'm gonna love every minute of it
Webmaster's Blog --

Got the car back from the garage today, my guess was right - the injector o-rings were shot and must have been leaking like hell. The car feels like twice as fast. I need to get it out on the highway to see if it fixed the overrun problem too. Feeling a lot more confident for the trip to Oregon in a couple weeks.

Finally got some nice weather so I picked up some 1/8 vac tee fittings and plumbed the boost gauge into a fresh 10cm x 3.5mm FPR line, reading 15 inHg vac at idle and about 5 psi when I floor it in neutral. Living downtown it might be a while before I can open it up on the road and see what the max boost really is. My neon orange 3.5mm vac line from Hose Techniques kinda rules, I'll have to go and replace everything now.

Got a bunch of PVC fittings at Home Depot for building a pressure tester and an old valve stem from my local shop. I'll take lots of pics and do a write-up after I pressure test my system.

Finally getting around to a lot of stuff I've been meaning to do.

Taking it into the shop for new injector o-rings tomorrow, hopefully that will fix the overrun problem. Either that or a bad vac line somewhere?

Started on the boost gauge install and carbon canister delete. Need to tee into the FPR hose to get a proper reading, just got to find my hose supplies box around here...

Finished upgrading wiper springs to some generic cot springs. Will report if they finally fix the "crappy wipers" problem. Taking some pics for an article.

I want to install my E-codes and Eurowires harness before the Oregon camping trip too. Supposed to have some good weather this weekend so I guess I'll be out back in the alley working on the car with the binners!

Superman's Ride --

I've had this car a week, and I think I have re-defined a love for a car. The only other vehicle I enjoyed this much was a Challenger. (Can't recall the year, but it's cousin was the Plymouth Sapporo)

But I actually enjoy this car more.

I am looking at different things to do to it, starting with fully restoring it to factory specs, and then upping the Supercharger a little, Heading over to Neuspeed to see what they recommend, and finding a few other little toys for it.

Stereo will be a custom thing, as well as the paint. I'm thinking I like the black paint, so it'll stay black. Will most likely add a single racing stripe up the driver's side, but that stripe will not be the standard "big fat line" as most cars have. I want the stripe to have a distinctly Tribal look to it.

The supercharger was blown by the previous owner, so I'll either be looking for a repair kit or some kind, or (hopefully) find one in a pull-it-apart yard somewhere.

Came across this site as I was browsing for Corrado related things, and thought "what the hell"

Here I am.

I put the key in the ignition, and......

There I go!

Corradokartei Journal --

Hello friends of this Register and Corrado drivers,

The Register has changed. After 6 years of my own hard work entering and publishing each of the 1600 entries the work is complete. The Register has a database and every user is responsible for their own entry.

The new login for old entries works as follows:
Your email address used in your entry is of great importance. Click the button REGISTER NOW. Enter your data. Once the registration is complete you'll receive an email in which you will have to confirm your registration. Only then can you log in.

During registration (or the first login) all vehicles entered by a user will be assigned to that user. This works through the email identifier. For this purpose you must enter the same email address during login which you have originally provided to the Register. Because you have to confirm the registration by email, you have then also confirmed your email address. This ensures that only the right Sciroccos end up in a user's profile. At a later date you can using the management tool modify your data, club, HP, VIN, attach a picture of your Scirocco, etc.

There is folder for uploading your picture. The picture will automatically receive a red marker. The text is generated dynamically. "Sciroccokartei.de Kartei 2:513" This marker would, for example, mean Register #2 (because of the 53b), and number 513 denotes the entry number in Register #2. The numbers have changed slightly because some of the old numbers were used twice. All entries have now been correctly renumbered.

Another scenario: A Scirocco without an email address, or where the user has changed their email address. Such a user may use a new email address, and re-register their Scirocco using their new email address. Vehicles affected by this will unfortunately remain orphan entries.

Following the tests I hope that everything will work as intended, and I'm open to suggestions for improvement (info(a)sciroccokartei.de)! It may happen that a few things may need to be rewritten. It wasn't easy! But Maddin (SC Cologne) has created the database! A big thanks! International entries are encouraged ...

Regards Webmaster Gregor
Today on the way into work the timing belt snapped. It was only a year old and not even 10000 miles on it. The Corrado went home on the flat bed without me. Thank God for AAA+ one call for a tow or roadside assistance and it pays for itself.

I bought my G60 in September 2007, and fell in love with it right away. I drove it while I was repairing my Jetta that was wrecked in March.
In October I blew a coolant hose and severely warped the head. So I pulled it under the carport and put it up on stands to start the Transformation!!

Webmaster's Blog --

Well the fuel pump is making those awful whining noises again, I guess its probably going to croak soon. I really don't want to get stranded somewhere this winter (even though I'd like to get my money's worth with BCAA... hmm...) so I went ahead and ordered a replacement.

I've got an early 1990 so I have the in-tank and the external transfer pump, oh joy. I just about had a heart attack when I saw the prices (around $300-325). Google to the rescue, I found the Airtex E8030 is a replacement for the OEM Bosch. Doing a search for the part number turned it up for $207 - not bad, $100+ saved. I verified the fitment for my VIN on Airtex's site so should be no problem. A couple of times I've felt a hesitation on throttle so I hope my original pump holds out until we pick up the new one just before NYE.

Just in case my Visa wasn't full enough from the holidays and the fuel pump, I went ahead and ordered a rebuilt ISV too for $180. I've probably bought about 5 ISVs from various junkyards and they're always fooked, let's see if a proper clean one (on my nice rebuilt and clean engine) will actually give me a low steady idle for a change. I'm tired of the surging idle, or high RPMs, or occasional stall from the damn things.

Tomorrow I think I'll finally have a stab at modifying my 3-bar badgeless FK grille to fit my G60. Damn tabs are set for the SLC so I'll have to cut them out and re-glue them, should be fun.

Hello. Well, I finally got the cool corrado that I wanted in high school. It needs a lot more work than I thought but it will be worth it. It is actually missing a sensor or something that attaches to the upper part of the intercooler tube. Does anyone know what that is? Or, does anyone know a good resource for working on corrados? (yes, I am a complete newbe).
Thanks
